From a distance, a brief glint. A shadow moves throughout the hypnotic pattern of coral and sea plants. Colorful schools of fish of all sizes list with the gentle rock of the current, before darting away to take shelter within the stinging tendrils of an anemone. The shadow moves on, and the fish list once more.

When the sea life is calm, and only the rays of sun break up the peace of the open water, a much larger creature unfurls and begins to swim freely. Hidden here, between blue and pink and green, among the seagrass and seaweed and branching algae, is the Lost Heart of the Sea. Iridescent fins frame the nimble body of this merbab, showing a prism of color when caught by the light, and delicate crystalline features mark their cheeks and crown, refracting in their eyes, which scan the open water with nigh compulsive frequency.

This creature's beauty is as striking as the merbab is swift, disappearing into the reef at the briefest off-current, or unexpected shadow overhead. One may never be certain of what they really saw in the dazzling depths of this Eladrian reef... But this one most definitely saw you.
